The South Platte River rises at over 11,500 feet in the mountains near Breckenridge and flows north and east through the Denver area and Greely until it reaches its confluence with the North Platte in North Dakota. The stream is a major recreational waterway, luring boat fishermen who pull trout in excess of 14 inches from its waters. Its tumbling rapids attract rafters, kayakers and whitewater paddleboarders to challenge cataracts along the way.
